Things You Should Know When Buying a Used Car:
Buying a used car is an exciting process, but it’s important to understand what you’re getting into before signing the dotted line. At Pels Auto, we want to ensure that you are fully informed about your purchase, which is why we’ve put together this guide with essential things you should know when buying a used car.
Buying a Used Car vs. A New Car: Know What’s Covered
It’s important to keep in mind that you are buying a used car, not a new one. With used cars, there will naturally be wear and tear, and while we aim to provide high-quality vehicles, there will always be minor issues that may arise over time.
The Consumer Protection Act (CPA) in South Africa provides certain protections for consumers, but it’s crucial to understand what does and does not fall under the code of conduct of the CPA. A common misconception is that you have 6 months to return a used car, but this is not entirely accurate. The 6-month period under the CPA refers to defective goods, but it does not mean you can return the vehicle simply because you don’t like it anymore.
It’s the consumer’s responsibility to ensure they understand which issues fall under the CPA and what falls outside of it. Some repairs and issues are considered part of regular maintenance, and not all are the dealer’s responsibility.
Check Mileage in Relation to the Year Model
When buying a used car, make sure to check the mileage and ensure it aligns with the vehicle’s age. A general guideline is to account for around 15,000 km per year. For example, if you’re looking at a 2012 model, a mileage of around 180,000 km is typical. While low mileage can be an attractive feature, higher mileage cars that have been well-maintained can still offer great value.
Understand the Contract and Agreement
Before signing anything, take the time to carefully review the contract and the agreement you’re making with the dealership. This includes understanding any warranties and extended service plans. Be sure to check what is and isn’t covered under the warranty, and don’t hesitate to ask questions if there’s anything unclear. You’re making an important investment, so it’s essential to fully understand the terms of the deal.
Finance and Ownership: Understanding Registration and NATIS Documents
If you’re purchasing a car through financing, it’s important to know that the bank or financial institution owns the car until the loan is fully settled. This means the registration papers and NATIS documents will be held by the bank until the loan is paid off. You will not receive the car’s registration and license disk until after the loan has been settled in full.
Don’t Skip the Pre-Delivery Inspections
At Pels Auto, we make sure that every vehicle undergoes a thorough pre-delivery inspection to ensure it’s road-ready. However, once you take the car home, it’s important to regularly service and maintain the vehicle to prevent future issues. Make sure to stay on top of any minor repairs or servicing to keep your car in the best condition.
Be Aware of Ongoing Customer Support
Our commitment to our customers doesn’t end when you drive off the lot. We’re here to offer ongoing support for your vehicle, whether you need advice, servicing, or assistance with any concerns you may have. We believe in building long-term relationships with our customers, so you can feel confident in your purchase every step of the way.
Buying a used car can be a rewarding experience, but it’s crucial to go into the process with a clear understanding of what to expect. Take the time to read the contract, check the vehicle’s history, and ensure you’re aware of the terms of the sale. At Pels Auto, we’re here to help guide you through the process and provide you with a high-quality vehicle that you can trust.
